Today, the Mediterranean University of Albania, the Center for Comparative and International Studies in cooperation with the Center for Science .and Innovation for Development organized a Scientific Conference implementing the project “Youth involvement in a constructive dialogue: Communist Past in Contemporary Western Balkans” (YOU-WB) supported by the European Union in the framework of Europe for Citizens.

The conference was greeted on behalf of MUA by the Rector of the University Prof. Dr. Adrian Civici. He emphasized the current importance of this conference and its scientific research not only for researchers of the communist past but mainly deepening the work in education and raising awareness of the younger generation to recognize the communist past consequently the painful communist past is never repeated”.

The conference continued with important scientific references by Albanian professors Xhindi, Qesari, Kalemaj, Pandelejmoni (Pope) on several issues relevant to decommunization, collective memory, and transitional justice, arguing that Albania's failure to face its past has distorted creating a shared memory and underestimating the massive abuses of human rights during its communist regime.

Lecturers from Italy, France, and Northern Macedonia focused respectively on aspects of Italy's political culture from 1989 to the present, the culture of memory and the importance of heritage in today's Europe, and the difficult path to democracy in a multicultural country like Northern Macedonia.

In addition to the presentation by the speakers and the participation of young people in the discussions, the conference continued with a group of participants from Albania, Italy, France, and Northern Macedonia with a visit to the House of Leaves in Tirana and a guide to the capital in “places of memory”.
